CAS- Creativity, Activity and Service, is one of the three core components unique to the IB Diploma Programme. It is essential in helping our students develop the IB learner profile traits outside of the required curriculum.
At DeLand High School our students are engaged in their communities in ways that are mutually beneficial. CAS challenges them to seek out physical activities, which is an excellent way to manage stress and can help our students begin the habits that will help them achieve balance. CAS students are also required to participate in experiences that are creative in nature.
Many students enter the 11th grade with a full array of involvement in CAS already. They are in the band, sing with the choir, perform in community theatre, work in local soup kitchens, tutor younger students, etc. The list of their activities and the possibilities for CAS are limitless. Students should not feel as though as CAS is just "one more thing" on top of their IB workload. CAS should be enjoyable and provide a certain amount of stress relief for students.
If a student isn't enjoying their CAS experience they are doing it wrong! If this is the case they should meet immediately with the CAS coordinator.
